Art & Porn is in the Eye of the Beholder

Going along with my recent post about offending people, I’m sure this one will.

If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then it makes sense that the same can be said about Art and Pornography.

What is Art? Is your definition the same as mine? You may like something that I don’t and vice versa. That doesn’t make your or my opinions any less valid. We like what we like. The same can also be said about Porn, can’t it? Some call Playboy pornographic, other say that Hustler is the definition, but if you were to look at both magazines you can see there is a clear difference to their content. So which is it?

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan of my definition of pornography.

It is my belief that Art and Porn are issues of usage.

I consider something to be pornographic not by the act is being performed but more as to why it is being done. If it is being done solely for sexual gratification then yes, it is porn.

And I define art the same way. If something is created to evoke a positive emotion, then I call it art. I’m sure some would also say the emotion can be negative too, I just prefer positive.
